The first ever Xitsonga drama to hit the small screens – Giyani: Land of blood – became an overnight sensation with South African audiences following its debut episode on 1 April 2019 at 21h30. The SABC2 drama series set tongues wagging with the first two episodes commanding increasing audiences of 1,534,859 and 1,604,293, respectively.
On average Giyani clocked in just over 17% of the market share for its first two episodes, which is almost double the audience share of the previous programming on the same time channel in a very short space of time, and the numbers seem to be climbing.
The telenovela, which is set in the heart of South Africa’s own Eden, Giyani in Limpopo Province, brings to life the conflict of two families locked in a bitter, decades-long squabble over a contested piece of fertile land and the banana plantation built on it.
Amongst the leads are acclaimed performers – Linah Ebony Ngcobo, Obed Baloyi, Charles Baloyi, Candy “Tsa Mandebele” Mokwena, Ndivhuho Mutsila and Yvonne Chaka Chaka.
